INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

ON THE MARATHON BATTLE

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE MARATHON BATTLE TO CIVILIZATION:

 HISTORICAL, ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND LITERARY EVIDENCE

 

 Dear colleagues,

On the Anniversary of 2500 years from the Marathon battle in the Persian Wars we are organizing an International Conference with the title: “The importance of the Marathon battle for civilization based on historical, archaeological and philological evidence” from 7 to 10 October 2010, in Kalamata, Greece.

 

The sub-topics of the Conference will be the following:

The representation and reception of the Marathon battle in:

  • Poetic texts

  • Rhetoric

  • Historiography

  • Art, Culture and Archaeology

  • Military art

 

The aim of the Conference is to enlighten the main aspects of the significant battle of Marathon, based on the relevant ancient sources. Our interest lies in the reception of the battle both in the antiquity and in modern times.

This Anniversary will bring together distinguished scholars of classical studies, archaeology and history to the School of Humanities and Cultural Studies of the University of Peloponnese in Kalamata and will enhance the links with academic institutions and universities abroad.
